I finished reading the Julie/Julia Project by Julie Powell and was inspired to start a blog. I am not a blog reader, but thought it might be fun. My sister kept a blog when she was traveling in abroad in 2006; but that's really the only one I've read.
I loved her book (which is about how she spent a year making all of the recipes in Julia Child's cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking); I thought it might be fun if my husband and I make some of the dishes from that book. I have had it for more than 20 years, but have only attempted a few of the recipes, as they are daunting at times. I have frequently used her "The Way to Cook" book, which is somewhat easier. Anyway, we've been in a little bit of a rut making dinner and watching reruns of so-so TV, worn-out movies and an occasional new movie. We go out to dinner a lot on weekends, but it still seems routine. Cooking together was fun last night - these recipes have a lot of steps and create a lot of dishes - so we tag-teamed and it went well. I even set the table with good china, silver, candles and it was nice. We looked at each other, talked and drank wine. We made Supremes de Volaille aux Champignons which sounds divine and was! It's really just Chicken Breasts in Mushrooms and Cream and not too hard. I screwed up the side dishes, though. We had tomatoes sauted in garlic and oil, but those were too acid-y, and my plan was to have buttered egg noodles, but when we got home at 6 pm after shopping for the ingredients, I realized the package of noodles wedged underneath the cookies in the cabinet had only about 2 oz left. I used the only other passable pasta, which was gemelli, but those were a little too dense for the velvety consistency of the cream sauce.
We may make more of these recipes from time to time - certainly I don't have the stamina to attempt Julie's achievement. I don't get home from work until after 7 most nights. And, I started a diet a couple of weeks ago, so cooking like JC every night of the week isn't so great on the waistline.
But tonight is Sunday, so....
